Tips on How to Make your Leather Furniture Last Longer

Leather furniture is truly the preferred choice of upholstery for modern quality seating.  From everyday leather chairs used for relaxing or dining to Italian leather sofas, there are numerous examples of how you can use these types of furniture in luxurious context.

Definitely, these leather sofas and chairs do not come cheap.  This is why it is important for you to understand proper care and maintenance for this upholstery.  Becoming informed and gaining knowledge will avoid irreparable damage to the finish and appearance of your furniture.

Leather is a Thin Material

Do you like to wear stiletto heels or sharp belt buckles?  With a little pressure from pointed objects such as these, it could rip your upholstery and ruin your chair for good – undoubtedly a disastrous outcome.

That’s why the first thing that you should understand about your leather chair is that it has a traditionally thinner material cover compared to what others use for upholstery.  In fact, leather is believed to be less robust when you talk about pressure points or sharp implements, especially when it is tautly stretched across its wooden frame.  So it’s very important that you consider possible potential damages you could do when you sit on your leather chairs.

Smoking is Bad for your Leather

If you are a smoker, know that any cigarette burns in your upholstery would be very difficult to repair.  Most likely, these burns will just stay that way.

Another thing is that, cigarette smoking will leave nicotine particles on your leather furniture which can cause premature aging and discoloration of its skin.  So if anybody in your family smokes, it is important to ensure that certain elements of leather protection are put into place.

For example, wiping the upholstery regularly with warm damp cloth will take out any nicotine that could stick to the seat.  Better yet, just avoid smoking on and around your leather furniture for ultimate protection.

Since leather repair is very expensive, it would serve you well if you look after your sofa and keep the tearing and ripping to bare minimum.  And if you will ever need repair, it is best to call a professional rather than do it yourself.

Even if it takes some effort to make your leather furniture last longer, it will truly be worth it.  Leather chairs are great interior design features in any room, and if you follow these simple tips, you will definitely extend the lifespan of your furniture.  Who knows, maybe you and your family could even enjoy it throughout your lifetime.
